eMerge Americas 2026: Why the Future of Tech is Radically Human

By Zeynep A. Talu-Balci

Stepping into the Miami Beach Convention Center this year offered a front row seat to the seismic shifts redefining our world. Now in its 12th year, eMerge Americas 2026 was officially the largest to date, welcoming more than 20,000 attendees from over 60 countries. While my schedule was tightly packed due to the intensity of my Doctorate residency, allowing me to attend for only one high impact day, the experience was profound. Representing She.Work once again with a press pass, I found myself immersed not just in technical specifications, but in the deeply human purpose behind them.

The most important message of 2026? The hype cycle has matured. We are no longer just asking what is possible; we are looking for real world implementation and documented outcomes. The faster the machines go, the more the human heartbeat becomes our ultimate competitive advantage.

The Powerhouse Behind the Press

Before the first keynote even began, the tone was set by the incredible team at Linda Roth PR. A massive thank you to Avery, Sam, and Addie for their warmth and professionalism. Their seamless support is the invisible infrastructure that allows storytellers to thrive in the middle of the tech hustle, a joy I first discovered during my coverage of eMerge Americas 2025.

Leadership at 500 MPH: Staying in Front of the Jet

The heartbeat of the conference was undoubtedly Colonel Nicole Malakowski. As the first woman to fly with the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, she has mastered the art of leading when the stakes are life and death. Her session was a masterclass in the psychological discipline required to manage high-speed transformation.

Leading through transformation: Colonel Nicole Malakowski shares a masterclass on staying “in front of the jet” during her keynote session at eMerge Americas 2026.

You always have to stay ahead of the jet. You never let the aircraft fly you. You always have to fly the aircraft.

This lesson in staying “in front” of the airplane is the ultimate metaphor for modern leadership. In the cockpit of an F-16 moving at 500 mph, if you are only reacting to what is happening now, you have already lost the fight. You have to be mentally living five miles ahead of your current position.

Nicole challenged us to apply this to our professional lives: the moment you let your schedule, your technology, or the rapid pace of your industry dictate your moves, you are no longer flying the plane. To stay in front, you must embrace the “training season,” which Nicole candidly described as a “chocolate mess” in the beginning. It requires thousands of hours of repetition until your decision-making becomes absolute muscle memory.

The Fifi Legacy: A Lesson in Radical Trust

This level of performance is impossible without radical trust. Nicole shared the story of her call sign, Fifi, which connects her to the WASP (Women Air Force Service Pilots) of WWII. For Nicole, a call sign is the highest mark of trust; you do not get one until your peers look at you and say they want to go to war with you. In the Thunderbirds, where you fly only 18 inches apart, trust is the only thing keeping you in the air.

Ultimately, Nicole does not fear technological change. What she fears is the abdication of human judgment. The more complex technology becomes, the more we need human ethics, values, and accountability to decide what should be possible. Humanity is the decisive element.

On the Floor: Innovation in Building Intelligence

Walking the exhibition floor, I was struck by the incredible creativity of the builders. A true highlight was catching up with my friend Tony Prol. We were together in the Built in Miami Cohort 3, and it is inspiring to see how his vision has evolved. Tony is a Miami Beach firefighter/paramedic who is uniquely bridging a critical gap in the real estate space.

Through SYT.FYI and FireTactic, he is developing technology focused on property safety, emergency planning, and digital building intelligence.

Innovation with Heart: Real World Deployment

The 2026 conference shifted the focus from hype to actual numbers and results:

  • Talent Management: Tim Gregory of Delta Air Lines emphasized that happy employees make happy customers, using AI to build a warm employee experience that reflects their brand.
  • Entrepreneurial Grit: Serial entrepreneur Bill Harris reminded us that nothing is an intense strategic advantage. He urged us to embrace ambiguity and the sense of going to work without a playbook.
  • Quantum Security: Matt Zmaglio and Kirk Hoeiman warned that Q-Day, the moment quantum breaks current encryption, is a reality we must plan for today.

The Path Forward: Staying Ahead of Your Own Jet

The most important message of 2026 is that the hype cycle has matured. We are no longer just asking what is possible; we are looking for real world implementation and documented outcomes. As professionals, entrepreneurs, and leaders, we are the decisive element in this equation. The faster the machines go, the more the human heartbeat becomes our ultimate competitive advantage.

Leaving the convention center, I was reminded that whether we are navigating a complex real estate deal, pushing through academic research, or building a new venture, our judgment is our most valuable asset. We are living in an era of incredible machines, but it is the human heartbeat that drives the breakthroughs that actually matter.

So, as you head back into your own “cockpit” this week, remember Nicole’s command: Do not let the plane fly you. You have to fly the aircraft. Trust your timing, embrace the messy training seasons, and do the repetition required to build your own muscle memory.

The future is moving at 500 miles an hour, but as long as you lead with heart and stay mentally in front of the jet, you are exactly where you need to be.
