The Microgrants That Could Keep Young Women in Male-Dominated Fields

GGDF's Fuel Her Fire offers fast, judgment-free microgrants to young women in trades, tech, and other male-dominated fields, because sometimes, the difference between dropping out and moving forward is a pair of safety boots, a car repair, or someone who believes in you.

GGDF’s Fuel Her Fire initiative provides fast, judgment-free microgrants to young women in trades, tech, and other male-dominated industries, because sometimes, the only thing standing between dropping out and moving forward is a pair of safety boots, a car repair, or someone who believes in you.

In the quiet corners of workshops, the hum of coding bootcamps, and the early hours of construction sites, young women show up with hard hats, toolboxes, and determination. But too often, they are also carrying the weight of unpaid bills, burnout, and being “the only one” in the room.

Despite decades of advocacy, women remain dramatically underrepresented in male-dominated fields. In construction, they comprise less than 11% of the workforce, and less than 4% in skilled trade roles. In engineering, only 15% of jobs are held by women. In cybersecurity, software, automotive, and advanced manufacturing, women often face isolation, wage disparities, and a lack of supportive mentorship. A recent study reported that nearly one in three women working in STEM considered leaving due to burnout and financial pressure.

Enter Fuel Her Fire, a new initiative from the Global Girls Development Foundation, designed to meet this moment with compassion and speed. This program offers microgrants to young women aged 18 to 29 who are either studying or working in these industries—and are on the brink of walking away.

The idea is simple but radical: when young women in male-dominated fields face real-world struggles like overdue rent, broken-down cars, or unaffordable tools, we respond quickly with support that helps them stay. Grants range from $100 to $500 per month for up to a year and can be used for everyday costs that stand between them and their future, certifications, groceries, gear, or therapy.

This approach is not about handouts. It is about belief.

Stories kept coming in—of girls dropping out of school because they could not afford safety boots, or missing class because their car broke down and there was no money for repairs. There was no safety net. So one was built.

The psychological research backs this up. Dr. Jeffrey Arnett’s theory of Emerging Adulthood highlights ages 18–25 as a critical window for shaping identity, work, and love. It is a period marked by instability, self-discovery, and often, financial vulnerability. Providing a small amount of stability during these years can shift the entire trajectory of a young woman’s life.

That theory is now embedded in practice: GGDF’s model is fast, judgment-free, and intentionally compassionate. The application process is simple. No essays or invasive financial disclosures—just a chance to tell your story.

The project is officially open for applications. The first grants will be distributed starting in August. In its first phase, the program is available to those living and working in the United States, with a vision to expand globally in late 2025.

The goal is not just to fund women—but to fuel them. To believe in their ability to finish what they started, even when the system has made it harder.

This initiative is part of a broader call to reimagine how we invest in gender equity. Instead of speeches and symbolism, Fuel Her Fire is grounded in the everyday: the unpaid utility bill, the missing uniform, the therapy appointment skipped.

“If it is keeping her from staying in school or doing her job, we want to help,” the organization says.

The Global Girls Development Foundation invites individuals, schools, employers, and nonprofits to spread the word, partner, or donate. It also invites young women around the world to tell them where the next spark of support is needed.

Because change does not always start with a headline. Sometimes, it starts with gas money. And belief.
