What is triangulation?

In psychology, triangulation is when one person brings a third party into a conflict to control communication or shape opinions. It often appears in families, relationships, or workplaces and creates confusion, division, and mistrust. The healthy alternative is direct communication and clear boundaries.

In human relationships, triangulation is a psychological dynamic that occurs when one person brings a third party into a conflict or relationship to gain control, influence opinions, or avoid direct communication. It is a form of manipulation that creates confusion and emotional tension between people.

This pattern is common in dysfunctional families, romantic relationships, friendships, and workplaces. The person who initiates triangulation uses others to control the flow of information or to obtain emotional support without addressing the underlying issue.

Examples include:

  • A parent who sides with one child against the other to gain loyalty or attention.
  • A partner who complains about their spouse to a friend instead of communicating directly.
  • A manager or colleague who praises one employee while criticizing another behind their back to create competition.

Triangulation can make people feel insecure, jealous, or mistrustful. It often serves the manipulator by keeping others emotionally divided, making it easier to maintain power or sympathy. Over time, this leads to a toxic cycle where honest communication is replaced with gossip, secrecy, or blame.

Healthy relationships break this cycle by promoting direct dialogue, clear boundaries, and emotional honesty. Therapists working with family or couple systems often identify and address triangulation to rebuild trust and balance in communication.

Triangulation in Psychological Research

In research, the meaning of triangulation is completely different and positive. It refers to a method used to increase accuracy and credibility by combining multiple approaches or perspectives when studying human behavior.

For example, when studying workplace stress, a psychologist might use:

  • Surveys to collect statistical data,
  • Interviews to explore personal experiences, and
  • Observations to see real-life reactions.

If all these methods show similar patterns, the research findings are more reliable.

There are four main forms of research triangulation:
