I recently had the privilege of attending the inaugural PROFILE Design Summit at the Eichholtz Gallery, set in the heart of Miami’s bustling Design District. This event, set against the backdrop of a beautiful showroom renowned for its luxurious furniture, lighting, and accessories, brought together esteemed panelists, including Will Meyer, Kobi Karp, Ralph Choeff, and Louis Birdman. They delved into pressing topics such as sustainability, technological impacts on architecture, and the evolving Miami design landscape.
During this gathering, Louis Birdman’s recounting of collaborating with Zaha Hadid on the iconic One Thousand Museum project deeply inspired me. His reflection on Hadid’s visionary work and indomitable spirit in the face of architectural and societal challenges highlighted her legacy as a pioneering force in the field.
This inspiration drove me to delve deeper into Hadid’s legacy and share highlights from her remarkable journey as a source of inspiration for women in architecture and beyond.

Instead, she envisioned spaces that flowed, defying conventional architecture’s rigid lines and embracing the realm of the abstract.
Despite encountering numerous obstacles as a woman in the predominantly male architecture industry, Zaha Hadid’s journey was characterized by unwavering determination and resilience. Her groundbreaking, yet often criticized designs, showcased her innovative approach, challenging the status quo of buildable architecture. Hadid’s perseverance culminated in her receiving the esteemed Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2004, marking her as the first woman to achieve this honor. This recognition not only highlighted her significant contributions to the field of architecture but also solidified her status as a pioneering figure. Yet regardless of her achievements, she remained grounded, famously stating, “I will never give myself the luxury of thinking, ‘I’ve made it.'” This humility and continuous pursuit of excellence fueled her work, making her a beacon of inspiration for aspiring architects, particularly women. In fact, although I am not an architect, her indefatigable spirit and innovative mindset have been a source of inspiration to me, illustrating that with passion and persistence, breaking through barriers and redefining the boundaries of possibility is within reach.
From the classrooms where she molded the minds of aspiring architects to the boardrooms where she presented her groundbreaking projects, Hadid carried the torch of progress. Her contributions were not confined to the realm of buildings; she redefined the skyline, crafting spaces that resonate with the harmony of art and human experience. Her honors — a testimony to her genius — include the esteemed Forbes recognition and the Royal Gold Medal, accolades that underscore her stature as an architect par excellence.

Having had the experience of witnessing this masterpiece firsthand during my visit to Cityscape Dubai in 2019, I was once again profoundly moved by the tangible realization of Hadid’s visionary concepts. Each curve and line of her creations pushes the frontiers of imagination, transforming city skylines and inspiring generations. Her work transcends mere buildings; it embodies innovation, courage, and an unwavering belief in the power of design.

Before One Thousand Museum was delivered, I had the opportunity to watch a video showcasing the construction of its innovative exoskeleton, a testament to Zaha Hadid’s architectural genius. Even knowing that the building had topped off successfully, the video’s depiction of the intricate process—fabricated in Dubai and assembled in Miami — had left me incredibly stressed, yet profoundly amazed. For curious minds, who would like to witness this engineering feat, here is a fragment of that video. Today, One Thousand Museum stands as a true inspiration for anyone fascinated by the confluence of art and architecture.
Hadid’s work serves as a beacon for those navigating the complexities of real estate and architecture. Her journey reminds us that the road to innovation is often paved with challenges, but it’s persistence and a refusal to conform that drive progress. With creativity and determination, one can not only envision but also construct the seemingly impossible.
I wrote this article in hopes of passing on the torch of inspiration from the remarkable life of Zaha Hadid to women all around the globe. As a gesture to pass on the inspiration of her life to future generations, I have chosen a special gift for my daughter: “Zaha Hadid 1950-2016: The Explosion Reforming Space” by Philip Jodidio. This book is more than just a compilation of Hadid’s architectural achievements; it is a gateway to the mind of a woman who dared to dream in curves and angles that others said couldn’t be realized.
This gift is more than a book; it’s an emblem of a profound belief in the power of vision to redefine our world. It is my hope that, through the pages of this book, my daughter will glean not only the aesthetic and structural brilliance of Hadid’s designs but also the courage, tenacity, and intellect that propelled Hadid to the pinnacles of architectural stardom. This book is meant to be a lighthouse, guiding her to understand that the only limits that exist are those we place upon ourselves.
Through Hadid’s story, I wish to illuminate the path for my daughter and you, my beautiful reader, that with imagination and determination, the architecture of our dreams can indeed become the architecture of our reality. The architecture of our lives is limited only by the breadth of our imagination and the strength of our will.
