Joining a group of exceptionally smart, kind, curious, and charming individuals is an experience beyond compare.
Today, I reflect on my recent participation in the Women in IP Global Networking Day event hosted by the Women’s Initiative employee resource group (ERG) at Cantor Colburn LLP; I am overwhelmed with gratitude and awe. Held at the University of Connecticut School of Law campus in Hartford, this gathering was not just another event but a celebration of women’s remarkable achievements in intellectual property (IP).
The evening unfolded amidst a palpable excitement as we gathered at the stunning UConn Law campus. Dean Eboni Nelson‘s warm welcome set the stage for an unforgettable evening dedicated to exploring the theme of Cultivating Leadership.
Dean Nelson’s presence was nothing short of extraordinary. As she shared her academic and professional journey with grace and eloquence, her words resonated deeply with each of us. It was as if we were being transported to another world filled with inspiration and possibility.
A highlight of the evening was the introduction by Cantor Colburn’s Nancy Kennedy, a visiting professor from practice at UConn Law. Her thoughtful remarks set the tone for Dean Nelson’s address, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and mentorship in nurturing leadership among women in IP. She is unbelievable, a distinguished expert in Cyber Security and Cyberlaw matters on both domestic and international levels. Nancy advises clients on intellectual property strategies, teaches at the University of Connecticut School of Law, and serves as a Supervising Attorney at the school’s Intellectual Property and Entrepreneurship Law Clinic.
As Dean Nelson spoke, her brilliance, kindness, and authenticity shone through. It was impossible not to be moved by her words, which were delivered with the strength and grace of a true leader. When she said the word “mom” and her voice softened, a moment of pure vulnerability touched each of us to the core. Her eyes got watered, but I was already crying like a fountain.
Her presence, heart, and intellect form the perfect combination that embodies a strong woman. With her captivating speech and genuine kindness, she has solidified her place in my top 5 list of inspirational figures.

Be innovative and trust in your abilities.
Dean Nelson emphasized the importance of thinking outside the box and having confidence in one’s capabilities. Being innovative meant exploring new ideas and approaches, even if they initially seemed unconventional.
Embrace rejection as a pathway to growth and reward.
She encouraged us to see rejection as an opportunity for learning and self-improvement. Rejection, she explained, could be a valuable experience that pushed us to reevaluate our approach and strive for better outcomes in the future.
Practice empathy and kindness in all interactions.
Dean Nelson mentioned the significance of empathy and kindness in fostering positive relationships and creating a supportive environment. Treating others with compassion and kindness, she explained, not only strengthened interpersonal connections but also promoted collaboration and teamwork.
Prioritize effective communication and collaboration.
She highlighted the importance of clear and open communication and the value of working together towards common goals. Effective communication and collaboration, she explained, were essential for building trust, resolving conflicts, and achieving success as a team.
Uphold integrity as a cornerstone of leadership.
Dean Nelson emphasized the importance of integrity in leadership. She explained that leaders who demonstrated honesty, integrity, and ethical behavior inspired trust and confidence among their colleagues and followers.
Lean into difficult conversations as opportunities for growth.
She encouraged individuals to approach difficult conversations with courage and openness, recognizing them as opportunities for personal and professional growth. She explained that we could gain valuable insights and strengthen our relationships with others by addressing challenging issues directly.
Stay true to yourself and your goals.
Dean Nelson advised individuals to stay true to their values and aspirations, even when facing challenges or obstacles. She explained that being authentic and staying aligned with our goals ensured that our actions aligned with our beliefs and priorities.
Recognize that success often requires strategic sacrifice.
She acknowledged that achieving success often required making sacrifices along the way. Dean Nelson encouraged individuals to make thoughtful decisions about where to focus their time and energy, recognizing that strategic sacrifice could lead to greater opportunities for growth and achievement in the long run.
As the evening concluded with remarks from Cantor Colburn’s Michelle Ciotola, a UConn CLAS alumna, I felt profound gratitude for the opportunity to connect with such remarkable individuals. The event was a powerful reminder of the importance of community, mentorship, and continuous learning in our professional journeys.
I extend my heartfelt thanks to Jessica Lister and the entire Cantor Colburn team, who contributed to the success of this event, from the organizers and speakers to the guests in attendance. Together, we are paving the way for a brighter future for women in IP, one inspiring gathering at a time.
