Goodwin University Launches New LPN Program to Combat Nursing Shortage in Connecticut

Hartford, CT – In a significant move to address the ongoing nursing shortage in Connecticut, Goodwin University has announced the launch of its new Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) certificate program. With the state’s Department of Public Health, Board of Examiners for Nursing (CT BOEN) giving its nod of approval, the university is set to welcome its inaugural cohort of LPN students in May 2024. This program aims to alleviate the nursing shortfall and provides a solid stepping stone for individuals, particularly women, looking to make their mark in the healthcare sector.

Goodwin University, located in East Hartford, CT, has been at the forefront of nursing education, offering a comprehensive range of programs, including Associate Degree in Nursing (RN), Accelerated BSN, RN-to-BSN, Master of Science in Nursing, APRN Family Nurse Practitioner, and APRN Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. The addition of the LPN certificate program further solidifies its commitment to nurturing the next generation of nursing professionals.

The program is spearheaded by Dr. Vivienne Friday, Dean of the School of Nursing and Health Professions, and Karyn Therrien, Director of the LPN program. They both underscore the pivotal role LPNs play in the healthcare ecosystem, emphasizing the university’s mission to tackle the nursing shortage proactively. Karyn Therrien expressed her enthusiasm about the program’s launch, highlighting the university’s dedication to opening up new avenues in healthcare careers for students annually.

The LPN program at Goodwin is designed with flexibility in mind, offering both full and part-time class options, and can be completed in 16 to 28 months. Graduates will be well-prepared for the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-PN) and can pursue careers in diverse settings like hospitals, nursing homes, private clinics, and rehabilitation centers. The program will be accessible at Goodwin’s East Hartford campus and the University of Bridgeport campus, enhancing its reach and impact.

Goodwin’s history of responding to healthcare needs dates back to 2004, when it launched its first nursing program. The university is a beacon of excellence in nursing and health-related education two decades later. Dr. Michael Pardales, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Goodwin, remarked on the wealth of career opportunities in healthcare, noting the LPN program’s alignment with current workforce demands.
